An Infrared View of Local Universe AGN

We summarize recent results on the infrared (IR) nuclear properties of Seyfert galaxies. 100% of all Seyfert 1− 1.9s and ≃ 50% of all Seyfert 2s in the CfA and RSA samples observed with HST/NICMOS show nuclear point sources at 1.6μm. We find that the unresolved emission is variable in 9 out of the 14 Seyferts with duplicate observations, indicating a non-stellar origin. We have also put togethe...

Our Second Look at the Immature Universe: The Infrared View

The long-awaited promise of studying high-redshift galaxies at long wavelengths has been partially eclipsed by progress at optical wavelengths, mostly because of the number of available pixels. It is nonetheless essential to study optically selected high-redshift galaxies at wavelengths longward of 1 μm, for several reasons. One of the indications from such studies to date is that interstellar ...

The Properties of Infrared Galaxies in the Local Universe

The 60 [im selected IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample is used as a starting point to derive additional complete flux-limited samples of extragalactic objects at 12, 25, and 100 ¡im. With these complete samples the luminosity functions at all IRAS wavelengths are derived for the local Universe. These luminosity functions are used to determine the infrared emission of the local Universe. The maximum in t...

The star - formation history of the universe - an infrared perspective

A simple and versatile parameterized approach to the star formation history allows a quantitative investigation of the constraints from far infrared and submillimetre counts and background intensity measurements. The models include four spectral components: infrared cirrus (emission from interstellar dust), an M82-like starburst, an Arp220-like starburst and an AGN dust torus. The 60 μm luminos...

Deep Near-Infrared Universe Seen in the Subaru Deep Field

The Subaru Deep Field provides the currently deepest Kselected sample of high-z galaxies (K ′ ∼ 23.5 at 5σ). The SDF counts, colors, and size distributions in the near-infrared bands are carefully compared with pure-luminosity-evolution (PLE) as well as CDM-based hierarchical merging (HM) models. The very flat faint-end slope of the SDF K count indicates that the bulk (more than 90%) of cosmic ...
